In collaboration with the KIEEC P&C Association and Woppaburra Traditional Owners, KIEEC is exited to be hosting a combined celebration day for the 30th anniversary of Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre and NAIDOC Day.

On the 14th July 2026, we are bringing together an extensive group of people whose important and lasting relationships with the centre have contributed to its ongoing success. They include:

  • Members of the centre's original planning committee and the Minister for Education at the time, Pat Comben.
  • Past staff, including the inaugural principal, Greg Hossack.
  • Regional DoE staff, including Regional Director, Sue Dalton.
  • Woppaburra Elders and descendants, including Uncle Nerark Morris, Aunty Julie Blair & Aunty Warinkil Glenice Croft.
  • Community stakeholders from across the Capricornia Region, including Professor Emma Jackson from CQU.
  • KIEEC P&C Association members.

The day will also see a student group and Community members from Woorabinda SS joining our celebrations, demonstrating our commitment to the primary focus of our centre - Inspiring future custodians through immersive island learning!

The day hopes to showcase the wonderful learning opportunities created by KIEEC as one of 25 Outdoor & Environmental Education Centres across the Qld Department of Education's network, and provide insight into the past, current and future journeys students have at this immersive island learning experience.

We would like to sincerely thank the Woppaburra Land Trust, Woppaburra Saltwater Aboriginal Corporation and Woppaburra TUMRA Aboriginal Corporation for their trust, collaboration and involvement on the day that ensures our event is First Nations led, culturally responsive and totally deadly!
